AAW History:
When Jimmy Jacobs debuted for AAW on October 22nd 2005 he was already well known on the independent scene for his work in various organizations including Ring of Honor. AAW was going through a transformation at this time and was looking for new talent when Jacobs’s phone rang. He was defeated by Jay Bradley in his AAW debut but it would be one month later at the first ever “ Windy City Classic” show that Jacobs would change the course of the company forever.
Jacobs was scheduled to appear for another promotion on 11/26/05 where he was holding their Heavyweight Title but when that promotion cancelled their weekend of events (a practice they had become infamous for) Jacobs called AAW looking for a spot on the show. The card was already full so Jacobs had to make an impact another way. During a match between Cameron Cage and Mikey Lee, Jacobs stormed the ring and grabbed the microphone. He gave a passionate speech about how he had become tired of his treatment in this promotion and then opened his suit jacket to reveal he was wearing their title belt. What came next would send shockwaves through all of independent wrestling as Jacobs threw the title belt in the trash. As controversial as it was it got people talking about AAW: Professional Wrestling Redefined.
What many fail to remember about that night is that later in the evening Jacobs would call out Jerry Lynn which would start a bitter rivalry between the two with the veteran Lynn not feeling that the younger Jacobs was showing him the respect he deserved. In February of 2006 the two would engage in the first ever AAW Dog Collar Match and as expected it was a physical and bloody war. Jacobs would sneak away with a victory but the war would not end until May when Jerry Lynn came out on top in a “Stairway to Hell” match.
In the fall of 2006 Jacobs would get his first taste of gold in AAW when he defeated Silas Young for the Heritage Title. It was also at this time Jacobs began butting heads with then AAW commissioner Billy Whack. Whack felt that if Jacobs was going to hold a title in AAW that the company had to be his first priority while Jacobs was obviously only concerned with his own stature and pocket book. The fans despised Jacobs for his arrogant attitude but there was no denying his skills in the ring. He would successfully defend his title against Ace Steel in October and Silas Young in November. Jacobs would not appear at the Windy City Classic II further straining the relationship between him and Whack. The commissioner declared that once Jacobs lost the Heritage title he was gone from AAW.
By early 2007 the tension between Jacobs and Whack had come to a head and in March at the 3rd Anniversary show Jimmy Jacobs won a battle royal and qualified for the “Final Four” match and a shot at the AAW Heavyweight Title. Whack had other plans however and informed Jacobs he had to defend his Heritage title before he could compete in the main event. The catch was he would not know who his opponent was. Jacobs came to the ring to defend his belt and out came the challenger “The Gold Standard” Eric Priest. A few minutes later Jacobs sat in the ring without his Heritage Title and without an AAW contract. It wouldn’t take long for Jacobs to make his way back to the AAW however as just a few months later Jacobs would unexpectedly return claiming he was injured when he was released from his contract (Jacobs did have knee surgery and was walking with a cane) and threatened legal action against the company if Whack did grant him a managers license. Jacobs promised he would be bringing some “friends” into AAW. Those “friends” turned out to be Arik Cannon and the Northstar Express. Jacobs would manage the trio until finally being cleared to wrestle again the fall of 2007 when he would once again focus on Eric Priest who still held the Heritage Title. He would also form an alliance with Ryan Boz.
In February of 2008 Jacobs would once again find himself in a Dog Collar Match. This time it was against Priest for Heritage Title and Jacobs would come out victorious and was now a two time champion. With Ryan Boz watching his back Jacobs would defend the title against “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown and Egotistico Fantastico. In June Jacobs and Boz would confront the legendary Terry Funk who would come back later in the evening and cost Jacobs his belt in a huge upset against Matt “Krotch” Mayday. A rift began to form between Boz and Jacobs as Boz began to question Jimmy’s “killer instinct”. The fans began to get behind Jimmy Jacobs for the first time in AAW and he would compete in a number of wild brawls against Boz including a “Fans Bring the Weapons” match in January of 2009 and an “I quit” match in March. Jacobs showed tremendous heart in these matches taking the fight right to the much larger Ryan Boz.
In September Jacobs was the challenger in an impromptu AAW Heavyweight Title match against Champion Jay Bradley and he made the most of his opportunity upsetting the champ and winning the belt. Jacobs reign would be short lived however as he dropped the belt to Silas Young in November at the Windy City Classic. Jacobs would bounce back and capture the AAW Tag Team Titles with Tyler Black in February of 2010 becoming the first ever Triple Crown Winner in AAW history.
